Coach Pizzo's Report - October 9

The Polar Bears competed in three events this past weekend including the Barnett Trophy at Bowdoin, the Moody Trophy at URI, and the North U Clinic and Regatta at Sail Newport.

The Barnett Trophy featured nine teams from throughout New England including two teams from Bowdoin. 10 races were completed on Saturday in a moderate SE breeze.  Sunday featured big breeze out of the SW with lots of current and waves.  Despite numerous capsizes, five races were completed.  The Polar Bears struggled a bit in the windier conditions on Sunday and finished 5th and 8th overall at the event.  Sailing for the Polar Bears was Alex Vasiliou '18, Martie Ogle '18, Ellis Price '18, Caitlin Tardio '19, Nora Cullen '18, Claire Havig '21, Emmett Ulian '19, and Nicholas Sarni '20.  A huge thanks to the Barnett Family for their continued support at the event.

The North U Clinic at Sail Newport served as a warmup for the upcoming New England Match Race Champs.  The team gained valuable experience sailing J-22s in a wide variety of conditions and learned some valuable lessons about Match Racing.  Alden Grimes '21, Isabelle Austin-Green '19, Louis Frumer '18, and Rowan Byrne '21 sailed for the Polar Bears.

The Moody Trophy hosted by URI featured many of the top teams in the country.  Ten races were completed in each division.  Conditions were generally light to moderate until the end of the day on Sunday when conditions became windy.  The Polar Bears finished 11th of 18 teams.  Christian Filter '20 sailed with Hannah Konkel '20 and Eric Hall '20 in A-division with Matt Safford '20 sailed with Marie Bergsund '20 and Kevin Elk '20 in B-division.

This upcoming weekend, the team will compete in the New England Match Race Championship hosted by MIT at Corinthian Yacht Club and the Captain Hurst hosted by Dartmouth.
