Flaharty's Career-High Leads Volleyball To Dramatic Win at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team outlasted Amherst in a dramatic five-set victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (9-6, 6-1 NESCAC) complete a weekend sweep of NESCAC opponents and extend their winning streak to four with the 22-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 17-15 comeback win.

Match Highlights

  • In a tightly-played opening set, Bowdoin held a ;ate 19-17 lead, only to see Amherst roll off an 8-3 run to win the set, 25-22.
  • Bowdoin answered with a dominant second set to knot the score, posting a 9-3 surge to close it out with an Emily King service ace, 25-16.
  • The Mammoths regained the lead by closing out the third set on a 7-2 run, getting a kill from Claire Dennis to win it, 25-20.
  • In a must-win fourth set, Bowdoin trailed for much of the set, including a two-point deficit (21-19) late. The Polar Bears responded by winning the final six points, including three kills from Caroline Flaharty to force the tie-breaking fifth.
  • Amherst again seemed on the verge of claiming the win, twice serving for match point (leading 14-12 and 15-14). But Bowdoin answered every call, and scored three straight points - on a kill by Sydney Salle, and ace by Michelle Albright and kill by Brooke Vahos to claim the victory.

By The Numbers

  • Caroline Flaharty was outstanding, totaling a career-high 26 kills against just two errors and 12 digs.
  • Kate Kiser dished out 57 assists, had five service aces and earned ten digs for Bowdoin while Lisa Sheldon had a match-high 35 digs. 
  • Sydney Salle added 19 kills to go with two blocks.
