Coach Pizzo's Report - September 9

The Polar Bears oped the 2019 Fall Season with five regattas.  Up at Maine Maritime, the team competed in the Harman Cup which serves as a qualifier for the Match Race Championship and the Penobscot Bay Open.  Saturday was very windy with remnants of Hurricane Dorian impacting the downeast region.  Six races were completed in the Penobscot Bay Open on Saturday and four races on Sunday.  The team struggled a bit in the breeze on Saturday and had much better scores on Sunday.  The team comprised of Per Black, Gigi Diserio, Meghan Gonzalez, and Lizzy Kaplan finished sixth overall.  At the Harman, the big breeze lead to a few Race Committee errors and one major collision between two other teams, preventing any scores from counting on Saturday.  Four short races were completed on Sunday with the Polar Bears finishing 3rd overall and thus qualified for the Match Race New England Championship at Sail Newport October 12-13.  Sailing for the Polar Bears was Matt Safford, Chris Luken, Marie Bergsund, and John Seider.

The Polar Bears also competed at the Harry Anderson Trophy hosted by Yale.  Sixteen races were completed in each division in a shifty northerly and then a fickle sea breeze.  Bowdoin was a bit up and down in the highly competitive fleet and finished eleventh overall.  Christian Filter and Julia Adams sailed A division with Teagan Cunningham, Emily Gonzalez, and Jonathan Chance sailed B division.

The team also competed in two events on the Charles River.  At MIT, the women competed at the Toni Deutsch Regatta.  Sixteen races were completed in each division.  The Polar Bears had a solid event with good starts and smart first beats, finishing fifth overall.  Kelsey Slack and Sophia Schaefer sailed A division with Ellie Maus and Hannah Konkel in B division.

Just up the river, the Polar Bears also competed at the Harvard Invite.  Five races were completed in each division in a light westerly.  The Polar Bears finished 8th overall.  Preston Anderson and Elijah Berger sailed A division with Hattie Slayton and Brooke Asherman in B division.

The Polar Bears will compete in three events this weekend including the Regis Trophy, Hatch Brown, and Barnett Trophy at home.
