Volleyball Falls to Wellesley in Season Opener at Wesleyan

BRUNSWICK, Maine – In an marathon match to start the 2019 campaign, the Wellesley College women's volleyball team outlasted Bowdoin, 3-2, on Friday night at the Wesleyan University Invitational.

The Blue improve to 2-0 while the Polar Bears fall to 0-1 with just their third loss dating back to the beginning of last season.

Match Highlights

  • The Blue rallied from deficits twice in the match to take the 24-26, 25-22, 27-29, 25-15, 17-15 victory.
  • The teams traded blows throughout the night, and Wellesley appeared to be on the verge of clinching it in the fifth, holding a 14-11 lead.
  • Bowdoin fended off three match points, however, and scored four straight rallies to take a 15-14 lead and earn a match point of their own, only to see the Blue roll off a 3-0 run to take the match.

By The Numbers

  • Bowdoin got a team-high 16 kills and 17 digs from Caroline Flaharty while Ashley Williams and Sophia Pahl notched 13 apiece for the Polar Bears.
  • Kate Kiser had 48 assists and two service aces for Bowdoin while Cori Gray had six blocks.
  • Emily King led the Polar Bear defense with 19 digs on the night.
  • Lauren Gedney had a monster night for Wellesley with 21 kills and eight blocks.

  • Bowdoin will look to rebound with a pair of matches in Middletown on Saturday. The Polar Bears will play Rhode Island College at noon, followed by a 4 p.m. non-conference match against Wesleyan.
